The rules of the contest are:
- The contest starts on January 1, 2003.
- Submitted works have to be provided in "human readable" source code using one of the following programming languages: C, C++, Java and Perl under one or more of the following operating systems: Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux, SUN Unix, MAC OS X. The following compiler/interpreter versions are permitted:
- GNU GCC 3.2.1 and/or Cygwin release version 1.3.17-1
- Java[tm] 2 Platform, Standard Edition v 1.4.1_01
- perl 5.6.1 or later
Free, publicly available modules may also be used on condition that version and source URL for download are clearly indicated.

If submitted code depends on free of charge third-party packages, it must include a complete list of all packages, including exact version information and download URLs. Entries that require commercial software or other software that is not provided as open source or under GPL will not be accepted.
- Communications and documentation relating to the contest have to be provided in English "human readable" form using "pure ASCII text" or "Rich Text Format" or "Acrobat®PDF" format.
- Each contestant can choose to submit an entry in one or more categories. Multiple entries are allowed in different categories.
- The contestants are allowed to make minor modifications to their submissions till the deadline.
- The OpenECG Consortium will nominate a Judging Committee that will have the sole authority, discretion and right:
- to disqualify any application or contestant;
- to grade the submissions;
- to select the award recipients.
- Plagiarism detection strategies will be adopted and plagiarism is considered a valid reason for disqualification.
- The decision of the Judging Committee in any matter relating to the contest will be final and not open to appeal.
- A list with the 5 best programs will be announced on the OpenECG portal one month before the 2nd OpenECG workshop (early 2004). The 3 best programs will qualify for a prize.
- The 5 finalists will be notified by e-mail and post.
- Winners will have 30 calendar days from notification to claim the prize. The prizes may be claimed by return e-mail. The prizes will be presented during the 2nd OpenECG Workshop. Unclaimed prizes will be awarded to the next finalist.
- If you are selected as a contest winner, you agree that OpenECG consortium may publicize your name, likeness, and the description of work you did to win the contest. Apart from the prizes associated with being selected as a winner, the OpenECG Consortium shall not be obligated to compensate you in any way for such publicity.
- If the winning entry is submitted by more than one individual, the prize will be divided equally among the participants who submit the winning entry.
- Each entrant shall indemnify, defend, and hold the OpenECG Consortium harmless from any third party claims arising from or related to that entrant's participation in the Contest. In no event shall the OpenECG Consortium be liable to an entrant for acts or omissions arising out of or related to the Contest or that entrant's participation in the Contest.
- Odds of winning depend on the number and quality of entries received. All taxes, including income taxes, are the sole responsibility of winners. No prize substitution is permitted. Winner(s) may be required to verify their entry.
- The submitted software and documentation are transferred to the OpenECG consortium under the GPL license ( http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html ).
