Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is OpenECG?
OpenECG is a European initiative with world-wide impact to promote interoperability and open standards in electrocardiography. The OpenECG portal provides up-to-date information, assistance, open source tools, data sets, conformance validation, and interoperability testing.

  • What is SCP-ECG?
SCP-ECG is a European standard (EN1064:2005) for high quality ECG specific compression, storage, and communication. SCP-ECG files of ~10Kb are excellent for health cards and micro-sensors. SCP-ECG is the result of an EU-driven effort with participation of American and Japanese manufacturers.

  • Are there other ECG data formats?
There are many proprietary data formats for ECGs. Well-known open ECG formats are aECG adopted in HL7 v3 (mainly for clinical trials), DICOM waveform (mainly for image and waveform time synch), and MFER, a Japanese format for time-series data.

  • Are there any sample ECG data sets?
You can find data sets from many ECG vendors at the OpenECG portal.

  • How do I read an SCP-ECG file?
There are SCP-ECG tutorials at the OpenECG portal.

  • Can I convert an SCP-ECG file to the HL7 aECG format?
An OpenECG working group was formed in December 2005, under Alois Schloegl of Graz University with the mission to create a normative converter between HL7 aECG and SCP-ECG.

  • Can I convert an SCP-ECG file to the DICOM waveform format?
Online conversion of SCP-ECG files to the DICOM waveform format is available to members. The SCP-ECG viewer of David Clunie, at the OpenECG SW open source repository can read and display both formats.

  • Are there any freely available SCP-ECG viewers?
The OpenECG SW open source repository available in the members’ area of the OpenECG portal provides a variety of tools for ECG parsing, analysis, and viewing. Members may also contribute new tools.

  • How do I verify that an SCP-ECG file is valid?
You can use the on-line conformance testing service at the members’ area of the OpenECG portal. For each ECG file submitted online, content and format reports are automatically produced, based on more than 400 tests. Warning messages refer to recommendations, while errors indicate failure to comply with the mandatory requirements of the standard.

  • How do I become an OpenECG member? How much does it cost?
You need to fill out an application form at the public part of the OpenECG portal under Membership. Once your application is received you will be contacted by OpenECG to provide further information in order to receive the membership. Membership is FREE!
